How does rails work?

How Do Rails Support Train Loads?
Rails bear the vertical and lateral forces from train wheels. The I-shaped cross-section of modern rails allows them to withstand bending moments and impacts. The rail head provides a smooth surface for wheel contact, the web resists shear forces, and the base (foot) spreads the load onto sleepers.

What is the material of the steel rail?
