Precautions for Crane Rail Welding

1. Select the appropriate welding process based on the rail material and welding requirements. Commonly used welding processes for crane rail welding include manual metal arc welding (MMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), or flux-cored arc welding (FCAW).

2. Choose the suitable welding electrode or filler wire compatible with the rail material.

3. Apply the welding technique specified in the welding procedure specifications, maintaining a steady and consistent arc length.

4. Ensure proper penetration and fusion between the rail sections while maintaining control over the heat input.

5. Weld along the entire length of the rail joint, paying attention to the weld bead profile and ensuring proper weld reinforcement.

Q: How to select crane rail size?

A: The crane's working load and load range.
The crane's range of movement within the work area.
Crane operating speed and accuracy requirements.

Q: What is the spacing for crane rail?

A: Clips should be spaced along the rail at a spacing determined by the CRSS and justified by calculations that consider the effect on the overall rail stress. For quay crane applications, this spacing is generally in the order of 600mm but varies based on loads and the rail strength.

Q: How to align overhead crane rails?

A: For safer crane operations, rails must be level with each other; their elevations should be close. Across the runway, the height or elevation of each rail is allowed for a deviation up to 3/8 of an inch, more or less than the nominal level. The level of change in elevation shouldn't be spontaneous; It must be gradual.

Q: What is the allowable deflection of a crane rail?

A: The crane runway shall be designed with sufficient strength and rigidity to prevent detrimental lateral or vertical deflection. The lateral deflection should not exceed Lr/400 based on 10% of max. wheel load(s) without VIF (Vertical Inertia Forces). The vertical deflection should not exceed Lr/600 based on max.
