The Functional Definition of a Rail
A rail is a hot-rolled steel profile laid in two parallel lines on sleepers to form the running surface of a railway. Functionally it does four things: it carries the vertical wheel load and spreads it onto the sleepers; it guides the wheels laterally so the vehicle stays on the track; it provides the running surface with the right friction for traction and braking; and in electrified and signalled lines it conducts the traction and signalling current. A rail is therefore not just a steel beam - it is a structural member, a guideway, a friction surface and an electrical conductor at the same time.
How the Steel Grade Affects the Definition
Two rails with the same profile can behave very differently depending on the steel grade. The grade sets the strength, the hardness, the wear resistance, the weldability and the fatigue life of the rail, so rail procurement always includes the material classification together with the profile. A 60 kg/m profile in a soft carbon grade will wear out quickly on a heavy-haul line, while the same profile in U75V will last for many years. The correct definition of a rail for a project is 'profile + grade + standard', never the profile alone.

Vanadium in U75V and the chromium and heat treatment in R350HT are what lift the wear resistance above the plain carbon grades. The actual heat certificate always takes precedence over the typical ranges.
Rails in the Whole Track System
The rail works together with the fastening system, the sleepers and the ballast. The fastening holds the rail down and laterally, the pad cushions and insulates the rail seat, and the ballast spreads the load to the subgrade. A rail selected without regard to its fastening system - for example, a profile whose rail foot does not match the clip geometry - creates problems from the first day. Cranes often operate on QU100 or A100 crane rail adjacent to the mainline track, and each part of the system has its own profile and grade logic.
