What types of railway turnouts are there

Railway Turnouts and crossovers are a set of railway parts at the crossing point of several rail tracks, which helps trains change tracks to other directions. Railway Turnout include following items:switches, frogs, guard rails, stock rails, and closure rails;

 

 

According to turnout detailed function, turnout is generally categoried into Single Crossover, Double Crossover, Track Crossing, Slip Switch and Lapped Turnouts.

 

Single Crossover Turnout

 

 

Single Crossover is composed of two turnouts positioned in two tracks that allow the vehicle to go from one track to another. A pair of single crossovers is also called universal crossover-one right hand and one left hand.

 

Double Crossover Turnout

 

 

Double Crossover, also named scissors crossover, consisted of 2 crossovers of opposite hand orientation positioned upon each other, extra part a track crossing diamond is needed. Double crossover turnout can make trains switch from both tracks to the other in either direction.

 

 

Track Crossing Turnout

 

Track crossing turnout allows 2 or more railway track cross each other, while extra part of crossing diamonds are needed.

 

Slip Switch Turnout

 

The more complex slip switch allows trains to both cross and to change tracks: slip switch is more compact than ordinary turnouts. As a result, they are often found in high track density areas such as passenger terminals, where space is at a premium. This makes trains can cross rail track or change into another rail track.
