Why are rail insulators used in railways?
Rails are main parts of the rail tracks. They lead the train and transfer the pressure of the wheels to the sleepers. It must have a continuous smooth surface with minimum resistance. Currently in the electrified railways or automatic block zone the two rails double as signal lines of track circuits and loop line for locomotive traction. So rails must be insulated in case of stray current interference. Usually insulators and insulated rail joints are used in rail tracks.

The insulators apply to rails such as 60kg (UIC) rail, 52kg rail, 136RE Rail, 90R, 75R, 50R, 60R etc. The rail insulator is mainly made by injection molding production, and it is mainly composed of Nylon-6 or Nylon-66 with glass filler content 20% to 35% depending on specification. These material are UV stabilized and available in natural color or as per requirement.

Additionally, environmental factors and regulatory compliance must be considered during selection and maintenance.
Installation and handling
- Handle with care: Use a lifting beam for handling and installation to prevent damage, as prefabricated joints can be fragile.
- Store properly: Store joints on timber blocks to allow air circulation and prevent moisture buildup.
- Use designated points: When lifting joints with equipment like rail scooters, only use the designated lifting points marked on the joint.

Maintenance and inspection
- Regular inspections: Conduct routine inspections to check for any damage or deterioration that could compromise the insulator's function.
- Prompt replacement: Replace damaged or worn insulators immediately to prevent electrical failures or accidents.
- Cleanliness: Keep the surfaces of insulators and the surrounding track clean to prevent buildup of dirt, which can lead to voltage fluctuations or other issues.
- Track maintenance: Pay close attention to the track bed around the joint. Poorly maintained rail tops or voids can lead to insulation failure and rail end lipping.
- Correct ballast: Use clean, high-quality ballast for reballasting work and ensure it is properly consolidated.

Prior to shipment packaging of railway fasteners, products must be categorized by application (such as rail connection, sleeper fixation, etc.). For fasteners with threaded holes (e.g., gauge plates, connecting steel plates), insert dust-proof rubber plugs into the holes to prevent dust and debris from affecting installation. For elongated fasteners (e.g., extended bolts), attach plastic protective caps to both ends to avoid bending or deformation during transportation. All sorted products are grouped in fixed quantities, bundled into neat rectangular units using elastic straps, and separated by cardboard between groups. The entire assembly is then placed into a five-layer corrugated cardboard box. The bottom of the box is lined with thick foam boards, and the top is covered with bubble film to ensure adequate cushioning for each product group.
