what is a screw spike?
Screw spike is first introduced in France in 1860,and is used to fasten the tie plate or pad to wooden sleepers. With the development of concrete sleeper, screw spike becomes more common in railway fasteners. It is always used with the help of the rail plastic dowel, which is pre-inserted into the concrete sleeper before installing rail fastening system. Screw spike can be classified into many types to meet different standards railway tracks. At present, the main types of screw spikes are Ss series sleeper screw, square-head screw spike, hexagon screw spike, and double-head screw spike.
Types of screw spikes

Ss series sleeper screws: A typical type of rail spike, often designated by a code like Ss8-150, which indicates its size.
Square head screw spikes: Named for their square head, these are available in various standard sizes (e.g., M22145, M22155) and can be manufactured to different specifications.
Hexagon screw spikes: These have a hexagonal head, also available in common sizes like M22145, M22155, etc..
Double-head screw spikes: This type is often used with specific fastening systems, such as the Nabla clip system, and is common in places like Africa.
24x145mm No.2 Rail Screw Spike
The 24×145mm No.2 Rail Screw Spike is a high-strength railway threaded spike suitable for standard gauge tracks and concrete sleeper fastening systems. The product features either a square head or conical head design for ease of installation and fastening. The surface can be treated with hot-dip galvanization, Dacromet, or anti-rust oil according to project requirements to enhance corrosion resistance. With a length of 145mm, the screw spike is suitable for pre-drilled sleepers and can be used in conjunction with flat washers, plastic sleeves, and rail clip systems to ensure secure track structure and precise gauge.

what are railway spikes made of?
There are two types of spike steel: low carbon steel and high carbon steel. Steel is iron added with carbon. Without carbon, steel is too soft and difficult to make good strengthened rail spike. The application of adding carbon to iron makes the steel quickly take the place of cast and wrought iron. Carbon makes the steel hard, but more carbon in spike steel may make it brittle. Approximately 0.7–2.5% carbon content is high carbon steel. Most rail spikes are made of high carbon steel.

Standard (low-carbon) spikes
- Composition: Low-carbon steel (mild steel).
- Properties: Resilient and cost-effective. They have a greater ability to bend without cracking or shattering when hammered into wooden ties.
- Best for: Standard rail fastening.
High-carbon (HC) spikes
- Composition: Higher carbon steel, often with 0.30% to 0.45% carbon.
- Properties: Greater strength and wear resistance than standard spikes. They can be hardened, though not to the same level as high-quality knife steels.
Advantages of rail screw spikes
The unique advantages of a 24x145mm rail screw spike are its superior holding power due to a threaded design, enhanced durability that reduces maintenance, and versatility for use with both wooden and concrete sleepers. The screw design creates a firmer grip than traditional spikes, making it ideal for high-stress areas like curves and switches, where it provides greater stability and is less prone to loosening from vibration.
- Superior holding power: The threaded design provides a stronger grip compared to traditional "dog" spikes, with holding power that can be up to twice as high.
- Reduced loosening: The screw-in method creates a tighter, more secure fit that resists loosening from vibration and heavy loads, leading to greater track stability over time.

- Increased durability: Because they are less likely to work loose, screw spikes have a longer service life, which can reduce the need for frequent maintenance.
- Less damage to sleepers: The twisting motion of a screw spike is less likely to split wooden sleepers compared to a driven spike.
- Greater maintenance efficiency: Screw spikes can be easily removed and re-tightened with a wrench, making maintenance tasks faster and more efficient.
- Precise installation: They can be installed with a specific torque to ensure consistent holding force.
- Versatility: They are suitable for use with both wooden and concrete sleepers.
- Reusability: Screw spikes can often be unscrewed and reused in the same hole if they are undamaged,
