No, a rail pad cannot replace a tie plate in a wooden sleeper system; they serve different functions and are not interchangeable, as tie plates are rigid and hold the rail while rail pads are elastic and are typically used between the tie plate and the rail to reduce vibration. A tie plate is a rigid steel plate that sits directly on the wooden sleeper to distribute the load from the rail and prevent wear on the wood. A rail pad is a separate, elastic material placed between the tie plate and the rail to absorb shock, vibration, and noise.
What is Rail Tie Plate?
Rail tie plate also called rail base plate or sole plate is a main component in railroading construction of a crane rail or track support system.Rail tie plates are used not only to support the rails, but also to fix the entire rail fastening systems. What is Rail Pad?
Rail pad is a kind of rail fasteners used between the rails and the tie plate, and it is usually made of elastic polyurethane mat. It is usually used under the rails and above the tie plate. Rubber rail pad can buffer the shake that the vehicles pushed on the tie plate and protect the tie plate and the sleeper from abrasion and impaction and prolong the service life of other fasteners.
