How to Choose Suitable Crane Rails
Sep 29, 2025
Selecting the appropriate crane rail is a critical step that determines the safety of crane operation and the long-term stability of the runway. The selection requires a comprehensive judgement based on several factors: the wheel loads of the crane, the rail profile, the steel grade, the foundation and site environment, and the joint and fastening design. This article sets out the selection logic in the order a project engineer would apply it.
1. Calculate the Wheel-Rail Pressure
The starting point is the wheel-rail pressure. This is calculated from the crane's maximum lifting capacity, the number of wheels, the static and dynamic load per wheel, the operating speed and the duty cycle. The wheel pressure determines the required rail cross-section: the higher the pressure, the larger the profile must be to keep the contact stress and the rail deflection within limits.
For high-intensity applications such as heavy-duty port gantry cranes or metallurgical plant cranes, large profiles such as QU100 or QU120 are typically selected.
For light-duty warehouses and medium-sized plants, QU70 or QU80 can meet the demand.
2. Choose the Rail Profile
| Rail type | Size (mm) | Height (mm) | Base width (mm) | Head width (mm) | Web (mm) | Theoretical weight (kg/m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| QU70 | QU70 | 120 | 120 | 70 | 28 | 52.8 |
| QU80 | QU80 | 130 | 130 | 80 | 32 | 63.69 |
| QU100 | QU100 | 150 | 150 | 100 | 38 | 88.96 |
| QU120 | QU120 | 170 | 170 | 120 | 44 | 118.1 |
The profile must match the crane wheel tread width and flange profile, because an incorrect head width causes uneven wear of both the rail and the wheel.
3. Consider the Foundation and Site Environment
If the rail is laid on concrete beams or steel structures, the rail base must distribute the load evenly and be prevented from lateral slippage. The rail base width, the pad thickness and the anchorage specification must match the rail model and the runway beam design. For seaports and coastal sites with high humidity, anti-corrosion treatments such as hot-dip galvanizing or special coatings should be specified for the rail and the fastening components. Indoor runways in dry environments can use plain or lightly oiled surfaces.
4. Select the Steel Grade
The steel grade determines the strength, wear resistance and toughness of the rail. A commonly used grade for crane rails is U71Mn, a manganese steel with excellent wear resistance and toughness. The table shows the typical chemical composition and tensile requirement of the grade.
| Steel grade | C (%) | Si (%) | Mn (%) | P (%) | S (%) | Tensile strength Rm (MPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| U71Mn | 0.65-0.76 | 0.15-0.58 | 0.70-1.40 | 0.035 max | 0.030 max | 880 min |
For heavier duty runways or where higher wear resistance is needed, harder steel grades can be specified; the choice should be confirmed against the applicable crane rail standard.
5. Design the Joints and Longitudinal Behaviour
The rail expands and contracts with temperature, so the longitudinal expansion and the joint type must be calculated. Welded joints are suitable for long-term, high-load environments: they reduce vibration, lower maintenance frequency and give the smoothest running surface. Bolted joints with fishplates are more convenient for later replacement and repair, and are common on shorter runways and where thermal movement is managed at the joint. The joint gap must be set according to the installation temperature and the runway length.
6. Specify Processing and Tolerances
Processes such as rail cutting, drilling and end grinding must be controlled to tight precision so that the assembled runway is straight and level. The rail should be supplied to the straightness tolerance of the standard, and the fastening system must hold the rail in gauge over the full length. Alignment is verified after installation and corrected before the crane is commissioned.
FAQ
What is the first step in choosing a crane rail?
Calculating the wheel-rail pressure from the crane's lifting capacity, wheel configuration, speed and duty cycle. This determines the required rail cross-section.
How do I decide between QU70 and QU120?
By the wheel load and duty: light warehouse cranes can use QU70 or QU80, while heavy port gantry and metallurgical cranes normally require QU100 or QU120. The wheel load calculation decides.
Why is U71Mn commonly used for crane rails?
U71Mn is a manganese steel with high strength (880 MPa minimum tensile), excellent wear resistance and good toughness, which suits the high wheel pressures and impact loads of crane operation.
Should crane rail joints be welded or bolted?
Welded joints suit long, high-load runways where smooth running and low maintenance matter; bolted joints are easier to replace and repair and are common on shorter runways. The choice follows the runway length and duty.
What anti-corrosion treatment is needed for crane rails?
For coastal or humid sites, hot-dip galvanizing or special coatings are recommended for the rail and fasteners. Indoor dry runways can use plain or oiled surfaces.
What processing is needed before installation?
Cutting to length, drilling of fastener holes, end-face grinding and straightness verification, so that the runway can be assembled within the alignment tolerances of the standard.
