How to use screw spikes
Sep 30, 2025
The screw spike is also known as rail screw. As one kind of Rail spike, it is a metal screw for fixing rail fasteners. Screw spike is usually made of NO.3 steel. Because its nail rod surface has thread, so it is called screw spike. The pull-out resistance is 0.5 ~ 1.0 times larger than that of common rail spike, but the thrust resistance is 50% less. Due to disassembly and assembly inconvenience, it is difficult to adjust the rail gauge, which is generally used on the railway turnout.

For meeting various needs of clients, we can offer coach screws, stud screw, railway sleeper screws and other coustom screw spike in railway.

Screw Spike is a high-performance railway spike, mainly used to fix rails to wooden sleepers or sleepers with sleeves, ensuring both longitudinal and lateral track stability. When using screw spikes, attention must be paid to the installation method, tool selection, and coordination with other fasteners.

First, screw spikes should be installed using specialized screw-in tools or a torque wrench to ensure that the threaded shank is fully embedded in the wooden sleeper or sleeve. Before installation, check that the holes in the sleeper or sleeve are clean and free of cracks, and confirm that the rail has been positioned according to the designed gauge. During installation, the screw spike should remain perpendicular to the sleeper surface to avoid tilting or damaging the sleeper, ensuring that the fastening force is evenly distributed.

Second, screw spikes should be used in coordination with rail pads (Rail Pad), rail clips (Rail Clip), fishplates (Fishplate), and rail anchors (Rail Anchor) during installation. The coordinated use of these accessories maximizes the fastening effect of the screw spike and enhances overall track stability.

Additionally, after installation, the threaded engagement of screw spikes with the sleeper should be regularly checked, and any loose or corroded spikes should be replaced in a timely manner to maintain track safety and smoothness.
