What is the difference between dog spikes and screw spike

Sep 23, 2025

Dog Spike and Rail Screw Spike are two common types of fasteners used in railway lines. They have obvious differences in appearance, structure, fixing performance, construction method and applicable environment.

Dog Spike

Named for its distinctive "dog's head" shape, the Dog Spike typically features a square or rectangular shank with a flat, broad top. It is installed by driving it directly into wooden sleepers using a sledgehammer, relying on friction between the spike and the timber for fixation. This simple design allows for quick installation and low cost, making it suitable for standard railways, light-duty industrial tracks, and temporary lines. However, as it depends primarily on frictional force, it is prone to loosening over time due to train-induced vibrations and impacts, requiring regular inspection and maintenance. Its pull-out and shear resistance are relatively limited.

Screw Spike

The Screw Spike is a large-sized fastener with full-length threads. Installation involves pre-drilling a hole in the wooden sleeper, after which the spike is screwed in using a specialized wrench. The threads engage tightly with the wood, providing superior clamping force and enhanced pull-out resistance.

Compared to Dog Spikes, Screw Spikes offer higher shear resistance, greater durability, easier installation and removal, reusability, and longer maintenance intervals. They are ideal for applications demanding high stability, such as high-speed railways, heavy-haul lines, and port crane tracks.

In practical track construction, both types of spikes are used in conjunction with other railway fasteners-such as Rail Tie Plates, Rail Pads, Rail Clips, and Fishplates-to ensure rail stability, distribute train loads, and extend sleeper life. The choice between Dog Spikes and Screw Spikes generally depends on load conditions, operating speeds, and maintenance requirements.
