What is the fixtures in Rails?
Rail fixtures and fastenings are essential, heavy-duty components-including fish plates, bolts, spikes, chairs, and rail anchors-that connect rail ends and secure rails to sleepers. They ensure track stability, maintain precise gauge, and allow for expansion/contraction to prevent derailment.

GNEE RAIL offers fastening systems suitable for ballast track, slab track, and crane runway installations, fully compatible with international rail standards and project-specific rail profiles.
Types of Rail Fasteners
Rail fasteners are critical components in railway infrastructure that secure rails to sleepers, maintaining gauge and preventing horizontal/vertical movement. Key types include elastic rail clips (E-clip, SKL, Nabla, Deenik), rigid fasteners (dog/screw spikes, KPO clamps), rail anchors for anti-creep, and baseplates/pads that ensure load distribution and damping.

| Type / Component | Description & Purpose |
|---|---|
| Rail Clips | Flexible, elastic fasteners (e.g., E-clip, Pandrol clip) that provide clamping force. |
| Rail Anchors | Applied to the base of the rail to prevent longitudinal movement (creep). |
| Rail Spikes | Fasteners for securing rails, particularly on wooden sleepers (e.g., dog spikes, screw spikes). |
| Tie Plates / Baseplates | Plates placed between the rail and sleeper to distribute load and provide a secure base. |
| Rail Insulators / Pads | Used to isolate the rail electrically (for signaling) and reduce vibration, often used with concrete sleepers. |
- Fish Plates (Joint Bars): Connect the ends of two rails together to maintain continuity.

- Bearing Plates: Distribute the heavy load from the rail to the sleeper to prevent sinking.
- Rail Anchors/Anti-creepers: Prevent the longitudinal movement (creep) of rails due to traffic.
- Chairs/Keys: Position and hold bullhead rails in place on sleepers.
- Rubber Pads: Used between the rail and concrete sleeper to absorb vibration.
How to install rail fixtures?
Installing rail fasteners involves securing rails to sleepers by preparing the foundation, placing rail pads, positioning rail clips (like KPO or elastic clips) with insulators, and tightening bolts/screws to specific torques, often ensuring 2-3mm compression for rubber-nosed clips. Proper alignment and lubrication are critical to prevent track gauge issues.
- Preparation: Clean the sleeper surfaces, rail seat, and ensure all components (fasteners, pads, insulators) are ready.
- Lay Rails: Position the rails on the sleeper plates, ensuring proper gauge and spacing.

- Place Components: Install rail pads underneath the rail, and place insulator components on the side of the rail to prevent electric contact.
- Install Fasteners/Clips: Position the clips (e.g., KPO clamps or elastic spring clips) against the rail bottom flange.
- Fasten and Torque: Insert bolts or screws, adding washers and lubricant. Use a torque wrench to tighten to specified levels, ensuring spring washers are compressed (typically 2-3mm for rubber components).
- Adjust: Check the rail gauge and height, adjusting with pads if necessary (up to ±10 mm for gauge).
