What is the hardness of railway track?

Jan 21, 2026

Steel rail (also called railroad rails, railway tracks, or crane rails) are the fundamental components of track systems, serving to guide wheels and distribute heavy loads with precision. Designed in an optimized I-beam cross-section that comprises the rail head (contact surface), web (vertical support), and base (stabilizing flange), these rails deliver superior bending resistance and dynamic stability.

  • Guidance: Precisely direct the wheels of rolling stock along designated paths.

  • Load-Bearing: Withstand immense compressive forces generated by passing trains and distribute these loads to underlying sleepers through systematic force transmission.

  • Operational Efficiency: Maintain a geometrically stable rolling surface with continuous rail head profiles, minimizing rolling resistance to ensure energy-efficient train movement.

What is the hardness of railway track?

Railway track hardness varies significantly by type, from standard rails around 248-285 Brinell (HB) to high-strength/head-hardened rails reaching 341-445 HB or even 35-40 Rockwell Hardness (HRC) on the surface, providing resistance to wear and indentation, with modern rails designed for higher strength and durability using specific alloy compositions.

Typical Hardness Ranges (Brinell Hardness - HB)

  • Standard Rail: Minimum of 248 HB.

  • Heavy Rail: Minimum of 285 HB.

  • High Strength/Heat Treated Rails: Range from 341-388 HB, or even higher (up to 445 HB) for specialized types.

  • R350H Grade (China): 350-390 HB.

Factors Influencing Hardness

  • Steel Composition: Higher carbon content (around 0.6-0.8%) and elements like manganese, silicon, and chromium increase hardness and wear resistance.

  • Heat Treatment: Processes like head hardening create a very hard surface layer while keeping the core tough, crucial for high-speed and heavy-haul lines.

  • Wear: Repeated wheel contact causes work hardening, increasing the surface hardness over time, but can lead to wear if plasticity is lost too quickly.

As a professional rail fastener supplier, GNEE RAIL can provide different standard steel rail such as GB,American, BS, UIC, DIN, JIS, Australian and South Africa which used in railway lines, cranes and coal mining.

Why Do Different Railways Use Different Hardness Levels?

Railway track hardness is determined by axle load, traffic density, operating speed, curvature, and maintenance strategy. On straight tracks with moderate axle loads, medium-hardness pearlitic rails provide an optimal balance between wear resistance and fatigue crack tolerance. On heavy-haul routes, where axle loads can exceed 25–30 tons and traffic density is extremely high, higher hardness reduces surface deformation and slows down corrugation development, significantly improving life-cycle cost performance. However, very hard rails also require stricter control of welding quality and residual stresses, which is why standards specify both hardness and mechanical strength together.

light rail

Crane rails and industrial transfer rails follow similar principles but face different loading modes, including higher local contact stresses and lateral forces from crane wheel flanges. For mining and light-duty industrial tracks, hardness requirements are lower, and steels such as 50Mn or 55Q are selected to balance cost and durability while maintaining adequate surface strength.

Since 2008, GNEE RAIL has been supplying steel rails of different grades for more than 18 years, steel rails from GNEE is highly recommened in China and abroad.Wtih cutting edge equipment, GNEE produces high quality steel rails that meet with requirements of most countries.
