What material is commonly used to make elastic rail clips?
Dec 29, 2025
Rail clip is a component of railway fastening systems. It is used to fix the railroad track to the underlying baseplate and sleepers. The clamping force by rail clips helps to maintain the gauge and prevent the rail from moving in the vertical and horizontal direction relative to the sleeper. One extensively used type of rail clip is an elastic rail clip made of hot-pressed spring steel. Its energy produced at elastic deformation can alleviate the vibration and shock when trains move. Other track materials such as rail joints, gauge rods, rail clamps, and rail pads are also available.

What's the function of rail clip?
Rail track supports vehicle and is fixed to the railway sleeper by rail fastening system. As the core part of rail fastening system, the bending and distortion of rail clip will produce crimping force on the rail track, which ensure the reliable connection between rail tracks and keep the integrity of rail track.
Besides, the rigid contact of vehicle and rail track will cause vibration, the elastic structure of rail clip can absorb the impact energy during the train operation, reduce the shocking. The elastic rail clip works under the repeated alternating stress. It bears various effects such as bending, torsion, fatigue and corrosion. When the vehicle passes, it also bears extremely high instantaneous impact load.

In the seamless track of viaduct, in order to reduce the interaction between the rail and the bridge, the fastener resistance is required to be small, the elastic rail clip is guaranteed to have a low degree of steel, so as to ensure that the buckle pressure loss caused by the compression of the underlayer of the rail when the train passes, and the fastener is not loose.
What material is commonly used to make elastic rail clips?
Elastic rail clips are commonly made from high-quality spring steel, such as Silico Manganese spring steel (e.g., 60Si2MnA, 55 Si7, 60 Si7) or silicon-chrome steel grades, chosen for their excellent elasticity, strength, and fatigue resistance, usually manufactured through a hot forging process to achieve superior microstructure and performance.
