rail fastening - Variable Thread Sleeper Screw
A screw spike, rail screw (or lag bolt) is a large (~6 in or 152 mm length, slightly under 1 in or 25 mm) metal screw used to fix a tie plate or fasten rail. Screw spikes are fixed into a hole bored in the sleeper. The railway screw spike has a higher cost to manufacture than the rail spike but has the advantage of greater fixing power; approximately twice that of a rail spike, and can be used in combination with spring washers.

| Product | Tensile Strength | Yield Strength | Elongation | Reduction of Area | Hardness |
| High Tensile Screw | 120,000psi(min) | 92,000psi(min) | 14%(min) | 35%(min) | HRC22-HRC32 |
A Variable Thread Sleeper Screw (VTSS) is a specialized, heavy-duty screw for railway tracks, featuring a unique thread design that adjusts pitch and depth for superior grip in sleepers (ties), especially composite ones, improving pull-out resistance, reducing vibration loosening, and meeting standards like Afnor NF F50-006. These robust fasteners use coarse, often single, threads and are made from high-strength steel, offering better performance than traditional spikes for modern, durable track systems.

How are railway spikes manufactured?
Railway spikes are primarily manufactured through hot forging, where steel bars are heated and hammered or pressed into shape, followed by heat treatment, and sometimes finished with surface treatments like galvanizing or painting, using various steels (like Q235, Q345) for durability and toughness. Machine processes offer consistency, avoiding imperfections of older manual methods, while special types like screw spikes involve more complex machining.
Material Selection: Low to medium carbon steels (e.g., Q235, Q345, 45#) are chosen for their toughness, bendability, and strength, preventing shattering during installation.
Heating: Raw steel stock is heated above its recrystallization temperature in a furnace.
Forging (Shaping):
- Hot Forging: The heated metal is subjected to heavy pressure (hammering or pressing) to form the basic spike shape (head, shank, point).
- Threading: For screw spikes, threads are cut into the shank, often during or after forging.
Heat Treatment: Spikes undergo controlled heating and cooling cycles to achieve the desired hardness and ductility, enhancing their mechanical properties.
Finishing & Treatment:
- Cleaning: Removing scale and impurities.
- Surface Treatment: Applying protective coatings like oil, zinc (galvanizing), or paint to resist corrosion.
- Quality Control: Inspection ensures compliance with standards (AREMA, UIC, etc.) for size, weight, and material integrity.

other types of railroad spike
Common Spike
Common spike, also called hook spike or dog spike, mainly used to connect the steel rail or rail plate with the rail sleeper. The cross section of each side is 16mm, and length is 165mm. The surface of the rod should be smooth and bright, flying edge shall not be more than 2mm. There shall be no crack in the joint of the head and the rod. The cutting edge shall not have burr and folding.

Against Freezing Damage Spike
Against freezing damage spike is same to common spike in material and manufacturing process. The reason of calling against freezing damage spike is that it is longer than the common one, and the longer length is used for the treatment of frost. With different thickness of the plate and damage degree, against freezing damage spike has various choice of 185, 205, 230, 255, 280mm.
Spring Spike

Spring spike is made of round or square spring steel, which has lots of patterns. The clamping part has certain elastic deformation, which greatly reduces the rail vibration, so it is called spring spike. When the sleeper deforms under stress, it can still maintain enough clamping force on fastener, and the pulling resistance and thrust resistance are higher than the common one.
