What are the different types of railroad clips?
Rail clips known for their flexibility and capability to absorb the forces produced by passing trains are elastic rail clips. They are recognized for their damping of vibrations and noise levels which makes them perfect for high-speed railway systems.
- SKL Rail Clips
The SKl rail clips boast a design that guarantees a secure grip and are commonly employed in locations demanding heightened stability, like bends and junctions.

How does an elastic rail clip function to fasten?
An elastic rail clip fastens by using its inherent spring tension (from bending and twisting forged steel) to create a strong clamping force (toe load) on the rail, pressing it against the sleeper or baseplate, which secures the rail, controls longitudinal/lateral movement, maintains gauge, and absorbs vibrations for a safe, stable track.
How It Works?
- Spring Action: The clip is made from spring steel, bent and twisted into a specific shape, storing potential energy like a spring.
- Clamping Force (Toe Load): When installed, the clip's ends press down onto the rail's foot (or baseplate), creating a consistent downward force (clamping force) that holds the rail down.

- Securing the Rail: This pressure prevents the rail from lifting, shifting horizontally, or moving longitudinally (along the track) relative to the sleeper.
- Gauge Control: By keeping the rail fixed, it ensures the precise distance between the rails (gauge) is maintained, which is crucial for train safety.
- Vibration Damping: Its elastic design also absorbs impact energy and vibrations from passing trains, acting as a shock absorber and reducing noise and stress on the track structure.
